Grand Haven, MI (WGHN) – A Grand Haven school board member is facing a drunk driving charge after police say she was found asleep behind the wheel of a running car. According to Grand Haven Public Safety, 52-year-old Kristal Boyd was discovered around 5 a.m. on September 25 in the parking lot of Beechtree Party Store. Officers say her car was running and her foot was on the brake.

Police say Boyd showed signs of intoxication and later registered a blood alcohol level over the legal limit. Boyd, who serves as secretary on the Grand Haven Area Public Schools Board of Education, pleaded not guilty and was released on bond. Her next court date is October 16. Court records show no prior criminal history other than minor traffic infractions.

The Grand Haven Tribune reports that Nichole Stack, president of the GHAPS Board of Education, said in a statement:

“The Board was promptly notified and will continue to follow its established policies and procedures regarding governance matters. We will share updates with the community – and with the Tribune – if the situation affects board operations or membership in any way.”
