(Ann Arbor, MI) – University of Michigan Health will no longer provide medically necessary gender affirming healthcare for minors after receiving a subpoena from the U.S. Department of Justice in July. In a statement, University of Michigan Health says as part of the federal investigation “and given escalating external threats and risks, we will no longer provide gender affirming hormonal therapies and puberty blocker medications for minors.” Gender-affirming care is considered by many medical experts to be medically necessary and potentially life-saving for youths who are transgender.
Equality Michigan executive director Erin Knott says the university “appears to acknowledge the legitimacy and value of gender-affirming care, yet, it has chosen to retreat.” She says that sends a “chilling and damaging message to the very young people who most need affirmation, stability, and support.”
