(Lansing, MI) — A poll of school leaders in Michigan finds 79 percent believe state government will shut down on October 1st. They do not have confidence that a budget deal can be reached before September 30th. The survey conducted by Michigan School Business Officials found 15 percent have already cut their fiscal year budget and 44 percent are considering doing that.

State Rep Greg VanWoerkom told WGHN News that Senate Democrats had been talking about a potential shutdown since November before Republicans took the gavel in January.

The lack of a state budget means schools will have cash flow issues starting October 20th with the state aid payment being delayed. Payroll, vendor payments, and other problems with operations will be at risk.

Catholic schools in the area have already started school and the first day for GHAPS is the day after Labor Day. Spring Lake has a half day as they start the school year today, August 25.
