Tall Ships coming to Grand Haven

By Mary Ellen Murphy Jul 28, 2025 | 9:13 AM

Grand Haven, MI (WGHN) –  An organization called “Sail When and If”  is coming to Grand Haven and bringing the tall ships with them August 7-11, 2025.

The 1256 schooner Liberty Clipper was built in 1983 at the Blount Shipyard in Rhode Island. She is a steel hulled modern replica of the Baltimore Clipper style schooners widely used, on account of their speed under sail, as Privateers during the War of Independence and the War of 1812. They also served as pilot ships in many of America’s largest ports. Now, in proud partnership with the City of Grand Haven, MI, they are delighted to be able to offer a rare  opportunity for people to experience a sail with When And If and Liberty Clipper on glorious Lake Michigan this Summer.

“We’re excited to bring these ships to the Great Lakes” says When And If owner Capt. Seth Salzmann “It’s an honor to bring them to the area and share their history, cra6smanship and sailing prowess with a new generation.

When And If typically spends her Summers in Salem, MA and Winters in Key West, FL working on short trips for guests as well as providing a shooting location for brands as diverse as Etro, Amazon and Tommy Bahama. Her dedicated crew work hard to run the ship expertly and efficiently, generating the funds to maintain, restore and prepare her for the round the world trip that will fulfil her destiny at last.

For the past two decades Liberty Clipper has been an icon of Boston Harbour, providing guests with the opportunity to experience a traditonal sailing vessel on short trips there. She is also a staple of the Windjammer fleet providing week-long cruises for up to 42 guests.
