ALLENDALE, Mich. — A 21-year-old Sparta man and a 17-year-old teen are facing multiple charges following a string of shootings and weapons-related incidents that occurred Saturday, May 3, in the Allendale area, according to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies were first alerted around midnight to reports of two armed individuals in a vehicle near the 4900 block of Becker Drive, close to the Enclave Apartments—an off-campus housing complex for Grand Valley State University students.
According to investigators, the suspects became involved in an altercation with several people at the apartment complex, during which they allegedly pointed firearms at bystanders.
After leaving the scene, the pair reportedly opened fire on an unoccupied business located on Allen Park Drive.
Later that same day, deputies responded to additional reports of gunfire along 24th Avenue in Tallmadge Township. Investigators say three separate homes were struck by bullets, all of which were occupied at the time. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Authorities believe all of the incidents are connected.
On Friday, May 9, the Ottawa County Prosecutor’s Office formally charged Riley Leary, 21, of Sparta, along with a 17-year-old male whose name has not been released due to his age. Both are facing charges related to the shootings and for carrying concealed weapons.
The investigation remains ongoing.
