Residents Urge Grand Rapids Officials To Become Sanctuary City

By Mary Ellen Murphy Jan 29, 2025 | 6:09 AM

(Grand Rapids, MI) – Dozens of Grand Rapids residents urged the city commission last night to become a sanctuary city. Nearly two-thousand people have also sent letters and emails to city officials urging that move over the past week. Movimiento Cosecha organizer Gema Lowe says Grand Rapids’ immigrant community has been fearful since President Trump was sworn into office last week after being elected on promises of enacting sweeping deportations.

She says panic and fear is “top of everyone’s minds” and impacts mental and physical health. No vote was taken on the issue during the four-hour meeting.
