Commissioner Bonnema Challenges Commissioner Committee Assignments

West Olive, MI (WGHN) – The Ottawa County Board of Commissioners met  for the first meeting of 2024.  During the Ottawa County Board of Commissioners first meeting of 2024, committee assignments were distributed among the eleven commissioners.
Commissioner Jacob Bonnema released this statement on his Facebook page.
“Of the seven standing committees, Commissioner Bonnema will sit on the Talent & Recruitment Committee. Commissioners Bergman and Zylstra, both with years of experience serving Ottawa County, will serve on the Planning & Policy committee and Health & Human Services committee, respectively. Thirty of the 37 adjunct committees are Ottawa Impact members.
In fact, only commissioners loyal to Ottawa Impact received multiple committee assignments, continuing a pattern of lies, single-mindedness and authoritative control over the Ottawa County agenda, which has produced no results, failed the Contract with Ottawa, INCREASED the size of county government and cost Ottawa County taxpayers hundreds of thousands in legal fees, and potentially millions more in wrongful termination settlements. Ottawa County voters asked for a change toward liberty. Joe Moss, Sylvia Rhodea and their big government cronies are nothing but the same.”
Commissioner Doug Zylstra had this to say on his Facebook page.
“I was very disappointed that the Committtee Assignments are so unevenly apportioned among the Board members. All eleven of us have talents, points of view and experiences that we bring, and these assignments unfortunately do not employ these at all evenly.”
Meanwhile attorneys for Ottawa County are trying to prevent five county officials from having to testify next month in a hearing over the potential four-million-dollar settlement with County Health Officer Adeline Hambley. Her attorneys have subpoenaed Ottawa County Commission Chairman Joe Moss, Clerk Justin Roebuck, and commissioners Doug Zylstra, Jacob Bonnema, and Roger Bergman. Attorneys for Ottawa County say the county never made a recommendation of an offer to Hambley to resign and be paid four-million-dollars, while she and her attorney says she accepted the offer and it was made.

The hearing, which according to the health officer’s lawyer has been scheduled for Jan. 19, is expected to take two hours.
