Judge Weighs Future Of Ottawa County Solar Farm

By Mary Ellen Murphy Oct 14, 2026 | 7:37 AM

(Grand Haven, MI) — An Ottawa County judge is preparing to rule on a legal dispute involving a proposed 300-million-dollar solar farm near Zeeland and Hudsonville. The Silver Maple Solar project would cover roughly 19-hundred acres in Zeeland and Jamestown Townships, generating enough electricity to power more than 34-thousand homes. Developer RWE is suing members of the Smallegan farming family over access to approximately 563 acres of their property, which makes up nearly 30-percent of the proposed development. The company argues it properly exercised its lease options before a November 2025 deadline, while the family says it never received the required notices and believed the original agreement was only for studying the land.

An Ottawa County judge is expected to issue a ruling Wednesday, although separate state approval would still be needed before the solar farm could be built.
