(Allendale, MI) – A rare flower known for its smell of rotting flesh is getting ready to bloom again in West Michigan. Grand Valley State University’s corpse flower, nicknamed “The Beast,” is expected to reach full bloom later this week at the school’s Allendale campus. The plant last bloomed in 2024, surprising experts who say the unusual flower can go several years between blooms. Its powerful odor attracts flies that help pollinate the plant, with the peak bloom lasting just 24 to 36 hours.

The university is welcoming visitors to its Barbara Kindschi Greenhouse.
