Olive Twp., MI (WGHN) – One person was killed and several others, including children, were critically injured Monday afternoon in a crash involving a cement truck and an SUV in Ottawa County.
The crash happened around 2:35 p.m. at the intersection of 120th Avenue and Stanton Street, near the Ottawa County Administrative Building, according to Ottawa County Central Dispatch Authority.
The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office said the cement truck was traveling north on 120th Avenue and approaching Stanton Street when an SUV traveling westbound failed to yield the right of way.
Five people were inside the SUV at the time of the crash.
The driver, a 51-year-old Grand Rapids man, was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, a 46-year-old Grand Rapids woman, was taken to a hospital in critical condition and remained hospitalized Tuesday.
Three boys, ages 4, 9 and 11, were also inside the SUV. Two of the children suffered critical injuries, while the third sustained moderate injuries. All three were transported to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, where they are recovering.
Deputies said the two adults were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. The three boys, however, were not buckled in.
Some of the victims were transported to area hospitals by Aero Med helicopter, while others were taken by AMR ambulances.
The intersection of 120th Avenue and Stanton Street remained closed for an extended period while authorities investigated the crash. The investigation remains ongoing.
