Wright Twp., MI (WGHN) – A deadly crash early Sunday morning on westbound I-96 in Wright Township left one passenger dead and a driver seriously injured, authorities said.
Deputies and emergency crews were called to the crash near the 24-mile marker around 12:15 a.m.Investigators say a semi-truck was entering westbound I-96 from Ironwood Drive when an Infiniti attempted to pass the truck on the right shoulder. The Infiniti struck an unoccupied Chevy Avalanche that was parked on the shoulder.
The impact sent the Infiniti back into the roadway, where it collided with the semi-truck before coming to rest in the median. The Infiniti then caught fire.
Deputies and bystanders pulled the driver from the burning vehicle. The passenger remained trapped inside and was pronounced dead at the scene.The driver was taken to a nearby hospital with serious but stable injuries. The passenger’s identity is being withheld until family members can be notified.
The semi-truck driver was not injured, and the Chevy Avalanche was unoccupied.
Westbound I-96 was closed near 8th Avenue for several hours while investigators processed the scene.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
