U.S. Senate Candidates: Pause Gas Tax

By Mary Ellen Murphy Sep 18, 2026 | 6:14 AM

(Lansing, MI) — With gas prices hitting five-dollars a gallon in many spots in Michigan, both U.S. Senate candidates say the state should pause the gas tax. Republican Mike Rogers is in favor of suspending both the state and federal taxes and says that would cut prices by nearly 71-cents a gallon. Democrat Dr. Abdul El-Sayed said he also wants the taxes suspended, but adds just doing that won’t address the cause of the price spike.

El-Sayed says the war with Iran has to come to an end to bring gas prices back down.
