Grand Haven, MI (WGHN) – Grand Haven City Council has approved up to one-point-nine million dollars for cleanup work on Harbor Island. The project will remove coal combustion residuals, or CCRs, from the island’s north channel. Kalamazoo-based Taplin Enterprises was awarded the contract. Crews will excavate and dispose of contaminated soil, remove water from saturated areas and restore the site.
The work is expected to begin this year while water levels are relatively low.
Mayor Bob Monetza:
The Grand Haven Board of Light and Power will cover nearly all of the project costs. The city could contribute up to 250-thousand dollars toward dewatering if crews encounter contaminants or materials beyond the CCRs.
City officials say they do not expect to find contaminants such as PFAS in the water, but are preparing for potential additional costs as the project moves forward.
