Grand Haven, MI (WGHN) -Plans for the former Grand Haven Board of Light and Power diesel plant on Harbor Drive are changing again. Developer Capstone Companies is proposing a mixed-use development that would include the Grand Haven Children’s Museum and residential units. The diesel plant at 518 South Harbor Drive would be demolished and replaced with a new building. The museum would be on the ground floor, with residential units above.
The plan also includes additional housing with lower-level garage parking, a small outdoor green space for the museum and a 28-space parking lot. Additional parking would be available nearby.
The proposal is still in the early stages, and the developers say the design has not been finalized.
Mayor Bob Monetza:
The latest plan received a more positive response from Grand Haven City Council than an earlier proposal for 19 condominiums on the property.
Council members did raise questions about safety between the museum and residential areas, along with access for school buses and emergency vehicles.
The Grand Haven Children’s Museum has been searching for a permanent location for several years. The museum and developers have signed a memorandum of understanding to continue exploring the Harbor Drive site.
