Wright Twp., MI (WGHN) – Three people were rescued and taken to the hospital Wednesday after a vehicle crashed and rolled over along I-96 in Wright Township.
Ottawa County Sheriff’s deputies were initially alerted to the crash by an automatic iPhone crash notification. A 911 call followed, reporting that a vehicle had overturned in the highway median between the eastbound and westbound lanes. When first responders arrived, they found the vehicle heavily damaged after rolling over. One rear-seat passenger had been ejected, while two other occupants were trapped in the front seats. The vehicle’s airbags had deployed throughout the passenger compartment.
Officials said it remains unclear whether the occupants were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. None of the three occupants were restrained when deputies arrived.
Firefighters with Wright-Tallmadge Fire/Rescue worked to free the two trapped occupants and provided emergency medical care at the scene. All three people were then transported to a local hospital by LIFE EMS for treatment.
According to a preliminary investigation, the vehicle was traveling north on Eighth Avenue when the driver failed to negotiate the turn onto Ironwood Street.
The vehicle then traveled up the highway embankment and became airborne, clearing the eastbound lanes of I-96 before landing in the median and rolling over.
Investigators reported extensive damage to the vehicle’s front end and roof, consistent with the reported flight path and rollover.
