(Lansing, MI) – The Midwest Independent Retailers Association is urging lawmakers to end the state’s bottle deposit law and remove bottle returns from grocery stores. Officials released a survey of retail industry representatives, with 90-percent supporting moving the returns from the stores, 97-percent worried about cleanliness and 93-percent saying they have sanitation concerns.
CEO Bill Wild says requiring the stores to accept can and bottle returns creates pest, food safety and operational programs. MIRA is suggesting sunsetting the bottle deposit program within two years.
