(Detroit, MI) – As tariffs on some goods from Canada have jumped to 50-percent and more are being threatened, Detroit Regional Chamber executive director Sandy Baruah says the jobs President Trump says he wants to protect don’t exist anymore. Baruah says we are paying more now for home improvement goods, home building, paper, and furniture.
He says manufacturing jobs now, especially in the automotive industry, are entry-level and don’t pay what they paid in the 1970s and 1980s, where someone could support their family, send children to college, and possibly buy a vacation home in northern Michigan. As far as Trump threatening to change the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America, it doesn’t appear likely to happen.
