Grand Haven, MI (WGHN) – Grand Haven Area Public Schools Board of Education met Monday, August 17, for its regular monthly meeting. The Board took action on several items and received updates as the district prepares for the start of the 2026–27 school year.
Wireless Communication Device Policy Approved
The Board approved updates to several district policies, including a revised policy addressing student use of wireless communication devices.
The updated policy aligns GHAPS with new state legislation requiring public schools to prohibit students from using wireless communication devices during instructional time beginning with the 2026–27 school year. The policy applies to devices such as cell phones, smartwatches, tablets, and other personal devices used for communication, entertainment, or internet access.
Student handbooks at each GHAPS school have also been updated to align with the new policy and outline building-specific expectations, including where devices should be stored during the school day.
Other Board Action
The Board approved a new agreement for the GHAPS Food Services Department to provide meals to students at Walden Green Montessori through June 30, 2027. The partnership is expected to generate approximately $129,000 in annual revenue for the GHAPS Food Service program.
The Board also renewed a two-year agreement with the City of Grand Haven for GHAPS to continue providing shared technology services.
Food service pricing was approved for the 2026–27 school year, with student meal and milk prices remaining unchanged. Adult lunch and breakfast prices will increase slightly.
The Board also approved three new hires for the 2026–27 school year, including an orchestra teacher serving Grand Haven High School and White Pines Intermediate School, a counselor at Grand Haven High School, and a student success coach at Duneside Discovery Center.
