Grand Haven, MI (WGHN) – A Grand Haven man has been sentenced to two years of probation after pointing a rifle at two fiber-optic workers and barricading himself inside his home during an hours-long police standoff in February 2025.
Matthew John Pring, 56, pleaded no contest to one count of felonious assault and one count of assaulting, resisting or obstructing a police officer. He is not eligible for early discharge from probation.
Authorities said Pring threatened the workers from an upstairs window of his Franklin Street home on Feb. 10, 2025, before refusing to surrender. Police used less-than-lethal force to take him into custody after several hours.
The Grand Haven Tribune reports that Defense attorney Terry Nolan said Pring was experiencing a PTSD-related mental health crisis tied to his military service in Iraq. Pring told the court he is receiving counseling and trauma therapy.
As part of his sentence, Pring must have no contact with the victims, forfeit 23 firearms seized from his home, and pay court fines and costs. He also received four days of jail credit for time served.
