Ottawa County, MI (WGHN) – One of the most closely watched races facing Michigan voters is the election for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Senator Gary Peters.
Senate Race:
On the Republican side, former Congressman Mike Rogers is running unopposed for his party’s nomination. The Democratic primary, however, has become a highly competitive contest between Congresswoman Haley Stevens and former Wayne County Health Director Dr. Abdul El-Sayed.
Other Key Races to Watch:
In addition to statewide contests, Ottawa County voters will decide several competitive races for Congress, the Michigan Legislature, and local offices, along with two countywide ballot proposals.
U.S. House of Representatives:
Incumbent U.S. Rep. Hillary Scholten, D-Grand Rapids, is unopposed in the Democratic primary.
Republicans Ryan Cushman and Terri DeBoer are competing for their party’s nomination, with the winner advancing to face Scholten in the Nov. 3 general election.
Michigan House of Representatives:
District 88
Republican Rep. Greg VanWoerkom of Norton Shores is seeking another term and faces a primary challenge from fellow Republican Ethan Frasier of Spring Lake.
Democrat Kiel Reid of Norton Shores is unopposed and will appear on the November ballot.
The 88th House District includes Grand Haven, Spring Lake, Ferrysburg and Norton Shores.
District 89:
Rep. Luke Meerman is not seeking re-election, leaving the seat open.
Republicans Joe Moss of Hudsonville and Patrick Kapenga of Coopersville are competing for the GOP nomination. Moss is the founder of Ottawa Impact and currently serves on the Ottawa County Board of Commissioners.
Meegan Zickus of Allendale is the lone Democratic candidate and will advance to the general election.
Michigan Senate:
The race for Michigan’s 31st Senate District is open after Sen. Roger Victory reached the state’s term limit.
Republicans Kevin Maas of Holland, Michael Markey of Spring Lake and John Wetzel of Grand Haven are seeking their party’s nomination.
On the Democratic side, Chris Kleinjans of Holland and Keagan Host of Hudsonville are competing for the chance to appear on the November ballot.
The 31st Senate District includes portions of Ottawa and Allegan counties.
Local Races
Robinson Township:
Township Clerk Victoria Sund is being challenged by Steven Lewis.
Crockery Township:
Voters will decide whether to expand the township board from five members to seven. Four candidates — Jacob Noel, David Willis, Michael Ercole and John Vandoorn — are running for the two newly created trustee positions.
