Trump Talks Up American Auto Industry in Detroit

By Mary Ellen Murphy Jul 28, 2026 | 7:37 AM
(Detroit, MI)  –  President Trump is in the Detroit-area today, renewing his push to bolster the American auto industry.  In a campaign-style speech at the GM Milford Proving Ground in Milford, Trump said he’s done more for auto-workers than any other President.
He says his tariffs targeting foreign autos have boosted domestic production. His visit comes less than 100 days before the midterm elections, and a week before Michigan holds its primaries. The Democrat Senate primary contest between progressive Abdul El-Sayed and Congresswoman Haley Stevens is in the national spotlight.  The winner will face Trump-endorsed Republican Mike Rogers.
