Robinson Twp., MI (WGHN) – — Five people were injured in an early Sunday morning shooting at Bass River Recreation Area, prompting a large law enforcement response and an hours-long investigation that led to the arrest of the suspected gunman.
The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were dispatched to the park at approximately 2:30 a.m. after receiving reports of shots fired. When deputies arrived, they found multiple victims suffering from gunshot wounds. As emergency crews responded, dispatchers also began receiving reports that several victims had left the scene in private vehicles to seek medical treatment.
One juvenile victim was found near M-231 and Lincoln Avenue, where deputies provided emergency aid before the victim was transported by LIFE EMS to a local hospital.
Three additional victims were located after the vehicle they were traveling in stopped on Mercury Drive near 112th Avenue and flagged down responding deputies. They were also taken to area hospitals for treatment. Investigators later learned a fifth victim had arrived at a separate hospital after being shot during the same incident.
Witnesses who remained at the recreation area provided investigators with a description of the suspected shooter and the vehicle involved. That information was immediately shared with neighboring law enforcement agencies, leading Allegan County Sheriff’s deputies to locate and stop the vehicle.
The suspect and three other occupants of the vehicle were taken into custody during the traffic stop. The Holland Department of Public Safety and the Michigan State Police assisted in the stop, while Ottawa County deputies transported the suspected shooter to the Ottawa County Jail.
Investigators said four of the victims are in stable condition, while one remains in critical condition. Authorities believe all five injuries are non-fatal.
According to the sheriff’s office, a large gathering involving both adults and juveniles was taking place at Bass River Recreation Area when an argument escalated. Investigators believe a single shooter then opened fire on a group of unarmed people before fleeing the scene.
Officials say there are no outstanding suspects and no ongoing threat to the public.
The Allendale Fire Department assisted at the scene by providing lighting for detectives and crime scene technicians as they processed evidence overnight.
