Grand Haven, MI (WGHN) – A Sunday night prayer vigil will take place at Duncan Woods in downtown Grand Haven for a family that was found dead Friday morning says Ottawa News Network. The vigil will start at 8:00 p.m.

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office had not publicly identified the victims as of Sunday afternoon. Authorities have confirmed the deceased include two adults and six children who were found inside the home Friday in the 14900 block of Riverside Trail.

Emergency crews were initially dispatched to the area Friday morning after residents reported smelling smoke. Despite searching the neighborhood, firefighters and deputies were unable to locate the source. Just before noon, crews returned after receiving reports of white smoke coming from the residence. After extinguishing the fire, firefighters searched the home and discovered the eight victims inside.

The sheriff’s office has classified the deaths as suspicious. Ottawa County Sheriff’s Capt. Jake Sparks said some of the victims suffered gunshot wounds, although investigators have not determined how many were shot or whether the shootings occurred before the fire. Authorities have not released a cause of death, identified a suspect or announced whether they believe anyone else was involved.

As the investigation stretched into the weekend, neighbors transformed the quiet residential street into a place of remembrance. A makeshift memorial outside the home grew with flowers, candles, handwritten notes and other tributes left in honor of the victims.

A banner at the memorial announced a community vigil scheduled for 8 p.m. Sunday at Duncan Woods, located off Sheldon Road between Taylor and Woodlawn avenues in the city of Grand Haven.

Neighbors also painted messages on Riverside Trail asking visitors and media to respect the neighborhood. The words “Slow Down,” “Stay Away,” “Stop Gawking,” and “Kids at Play” were written on the pavement as people continued to visit the area.

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, assisted by the Michigan State Police, continues to investigate what happened inside the home. Officials say more information, including the identities of the victims, will be released as the investigation progresses.
