Zeeland Twp., MI (WGHN) – A semi-truck trailer was struck by a train Wednesday night in Zeeland Twp after becoming stuck on railroad tracks, according to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.
The crash was reported around 10:20 p.m. at the intersection of Chicago Drive and 76th Avenue.Investigators said a 61-year-old Hart man was turning his semi from westbound Chicago Drive onto northbound 76th Avenue when the trailer became lodged across the tracks. An eastbound train then collided with the trailer.
The driver was able to get out of the cab before the impact and was not injured. No other injuries were reported.
The collision split the trailer in half, leaving debris scattered across the area and requiring extensive cleanup. The train’s engine was also disabled in the crash and must be replaced before the train can be moved.
Ottawa County Hazmat crews responded to the scene to investigate a possible fuel leak from the locomotive. The wreckage has now been cleared and crash remains under investigation.
