ZEELAND TOWNSHIP, MI (WGHN) – A Hudsonville man escaped with minor injuries after his SUV was struck by an eastbound train Tuesday afternoon in Zeeland Township.

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were dispatched around 4:40 p.m. to the 6000 block of Chicago Drive for a reported crash involving a train and an SUV.

Investigators determined the 46-year-old driver was pulling out from a private drive near the railroad crossing when he drove into the path of the approaching train.

The driver suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene. The train’s two engineers were not injured.

Although the train sustained damage in the collision, officials said it remained operational.

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office and CSX Police are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash.
