Grand Haven, MI (WGHN) -The Grand Haven Lighthouse is closed today due to wind and waves. A Beach Hazard Statement has waves as high a 7 feet predicted for Grand Haven through Wednesday.
Dangerous swimming conditions are expected along the Lake Michigan shoreline through Wednesday evening, prompting a Beach Hazards Statement for Mason, Oceana, Muskegon, Ottawa, Allegan and Van Buren counties.
High waves, strong currents and dangerous swimming conditions are expected throughout the advisory period. Waves may also wash over piers, creating hazardous conditions for anyone walking on them.
Beachgoers are urged to stay out of the water and avoid walking on piers, where waves can quickly sweep people into the lake. Strong currents can also pull swimmers into deeper water.
Residents and visitors should check with local officials for possible beach closures before heading to the shoreline.
The lighthouse will reopen Thursday. Follow the Grand Haven Lighthouse Conservancy here.
