Lansing, MI (WGHN) – The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) has issued a statewide Air Quality Alert for Sunday, July 19, 2026, due to elevated levels of fine particulate matter from wildfire smoke.
Smoke is expected to impact air quality across Michigan, with conditions ranging from Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups throughout the Lower Peninsula to Unhealthy across much of the Upper Peninsula. Lingering wildfire smoke may also contribute to increased ozone levels.
Residents are encouraged to limit prolonged or strenuous outdoor activities, especially children, older adults, pregnant individuals, and people with heart disease, asthma, or other respiratory conditions. Watch for symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, dizziness, or irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat.
To reduce smoke exposure:
- Stay indoors when possible and keep windows and doors closed.
- Run central air conditioning with a MERV-13 or higher-rated filter, if available.
- Avoid outdoor burning and limit the use of residential wood-burning devices.
- Reduce strenuous outdoor exercise until air quality improves.
