Michigan craft beer is once again in the spotlight as Governor Gretchen Whitmer has officially proclaimed July 2026 as Michigan Beer Month, recognizing the state’s thriving brewing industry and the businesses, farmers and artisans that help make it one of the nation’s premier craft beer destinations.
The month-long celebration, organized by the Michigan Brewers Guild, encourages residents and visitors alike to explore Michigan’s diverse brewery scene while supporting local businesses and agricultural partners across the state.
Founded in 1997, the Michigan Brewers Guild has spent nearly three decades promoting Michigan-made craft beer and strengthening the state’s brewing community. The Guild hosted its first beer festival in July 1998 and today produces four annual festivals dedicated exclusively to Michigan craft beer. Collectively, the events attract more than 35,000 attendees each year.
To mark this year’s celebration, nearly 50 Guild member breweries are offering a limited-edition 2026 Michigan Beer Month commemorative pint glass, available while supplies last. The special glass provides beer enthusiasts with a unique way to celebrate the state’s craft brewing tradition throughout July.
The Guild has also launched The Great Beer State Collaboration, a new initiative designed to strengthen relationships between breweries and the agricultural producers that support the industry. Running through February 2027, the campaign highlights partnerships with hop growers, malt houses, yeast laboratories, honey producers and other suppliers across five regions of the state, with each region featured during a two-month campaign.
Michigan continues to be recognized as one of the nation’s leading craft beer states. Home to more than 400 breweries, microbreweries and brewpubs, Michigan ranks ninth nationally in the number of brewing establishments, reflecting the industry’s significant economic and cultural impact.
Beer lovers can also look ahead to two of the Guild’s signature festivals later this year. The U.P. Fall Beer Festival will take place Sept. 12 at Mattson Lower Harbor Park in Marquette, while the Detroit Fall Beer Festival returns to Eastern Market on Oct. 24, featuring hundreds of Michigan-made beers, local food vendors and live music.
The Michigan Brewers Guild says Michigan Beer Month is an opportunity to celebrate not only the state’s award-winning breweries, but also the farmers, suppliers and communities that help make Michigan one of America’s great craft beer destinations.
