Grand Haven, MI (WGHN) –  Grand Haven Public Safety temporarily closed the city pier and part of Grand Haven State Park on the Fourth of July as large crowds led to a spike in calls for service.

Officials closed the pier around 1 p.m. after reports of assaults, intoxicated individuals and disorderly conduct. Part of the state park beach was also temporarily closed to reduce overcrowding.

Mayor Bob Monetza:

The pier reopened around 8 p.m. after conditions improved. Authorities reported one arrest at the state park and no injuries.

Public Safety says the closures were made to protect public safety as holiday crowds grew throughout the day.
