Grand Haven, MI (WGHN) – The Loutit District Library is inviting community members to take part in a nationwide reading of the Declaration of Independence on Wednesday, July 8, at 6 p.m., as communities across the country commemorate the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding.

Although Independence Day is celebrated on July 4, the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence took place on July 8, 1776, when the document was read aloud to citizens in Philadelphia shortly after its adoption by the Continental Congress.

To honor that historic milestone 250 years later, communities in all 50 states, U.S. territories and across nine time zones will participate in “Sharing the Spirit of America,” a synchronized public reading of the Declaration.

The Loutit District Library is joining the nationwide observance and is seeking volunteers from civic organizations, local government, and other community groups to each read a short section of the Declaration during the event.

Organizers say the reading is intended to commemorate the nation’s founding while encouraging residents to reflect on the enduring principles of liberty, equality and self-government that continue to shape the United States.

Community members interested in participating as readers are encouraged to contact the Loutit District Library for additional information. The event is free and open to the public.

WGHN’s own Jesse Bruce will take part in the reading.
