(Vatican City) – Pope Leo is calling on the U.S. to protect immigrants on the nation’s 250th birthday. The Pope appealed to Americans on Saturday to welcome new arrivals and protect them in a letter sent to his home country. Leo also urged the world to become “more human” and to help those fleeing war and poverty. The pontiff’s message comes the day after he was awarded the National Constitution Center’s Liberty Medal during a virtual ceremony in Philadelphia.

The award noted the Pope’s “lifelong work promoting religious liberty and freedom of conscience and expression around the world.”
