By Mary Ellen Murphy Jun 30, 2026 | 7:38 AM

Lansing, MI (WGHN) – The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy has issued an Air Quality Alert for Tuesday, June 30, due to elevated ozone levels across west and southwest Michigan.

The advisory includes Muskegon, Ottawa, Kent, Allegan, Van Buren, and Berrien counties, where air quality is expected to reach the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups category.

Warm temperatures, sunshine, and southwest winds are expected to increase ground-level ozone.

Children, older adults, and people with asthma, heart disease, or other respiratory conditions should limit strenuous outdoor activity and watch for symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, dizziness, or burning eyes, nose, or throat.

Residents are encouraged to help reduce ozone by driving less, combining errands, avoiding unnecessary vehicle idling, delaying the use of gasoline-powered lawn equipment, and avoiding topping off gas tanks when refueling.
