Grand Haven, MI (WGHN) – The Grand Haven Board of Light & Power has completed a $1.39 million project to move electrical lines underground along Harbor Drive in downtown Grand Haven.
The project converted 13.2-kilovolt overhead distribution lines between Columbus Avenue and Howard Avenue into an underground system. Work included installing two new underground three-phase circuits, pad-mounted switchgear, sectionalizing cabinets and underground secondary conductors, while removing utility poles and overhead wires.
Planning for the project began years ago, with underground conduits installed during the Harbor Drive reconstruction project in 2018. Those preparations helped streamline the conversion and reduce disruptions during construction. Kent Power partnered with the BLP on the project.
The Harbor Drive undergrounding effort is part of a broader series of electrical system upgrades completed throughout the BLP service area, which includes Grand Haven, Ferrysburg, Grand Haven Township and Spring Lake Township. Utility officials say the investments have improved reliability,
reduced outages and strengthened the electrical system.
The completed project also enhances the appearance of downtown Grand Haven by eliminating overhead utility lines along one of the city’s main corridors.
Project updates and before-and-after drone videos are available on the BLP website.
