ALLENDALE TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Allendale Township officials have approved a one-year moratorium on data centers and other large-scale energy projects while they develop regulations for future proposals.
MLive reports that the township board unanimously adopted the moratorium June 8, temporarily halting consideration of data centers, large-scale solar farms, wind farms and battery storage facilities.
Township leaders said the pause will allow time to study potential impacts on public health, infrastructure and the environment and to review existing zoning ordinances. Officials also plan to gather public input before considering any changes to local regulations.
No data center proposals have been submitted in Allendale Township, but officials want zoning standards in place before developers bring forward projects.
The move follows similar actions by more than 50 communities across Michigan. Nearby Cascade Township approved a six-month moratorium earlier this year, while Lowell Township recently rejected a proposed moratorium amid continued opposition to a planned Microsoft data center development.
