By Mary Ellen Murphy Jun 12, 2026 | 7:02 AM

(Grand Rapids, MI) — Severe weather blasted west Michigan for a second straight night Thursday, triggering a tornado watch for most of the area that expired just before midnight. A radar-confirmed tornado happened ten-miles north of Hastings at 9:33 p.m. and the National Weather Service will investigate the damage from that. Two small fires were also started when trees fell on power lines in Zeeland in the area of Jefferson Street and Garfield Avenue along with in Caledonia Township along Whitneyville Court north of 84th Street.

Tornado sirens were activated in Ottawa and Kent counties. Residents are urged to stay away from downed power lines and use caution when traveling.

Rob Shelly is General Manager of the Grand Haven Board of Light and Power. He says they are always ready:

As of about 11:30 p.m. Thursday, power outages across Michigan had climbed back to approximately 54,000 customers. Consumers Energy said hundreds of crews were working to restore service in areas affected by Wednesday’s storms and stood ready to respond to any additional outages caused by Thursday’s severe weather.
