(Pittsfield Township, MI) — Protestors demonstrated outside the Women’s Huron Valley Correctional Facility in Washtenaw County after the third inmate in the past month died on June 6th. Families and advocates gathered yesterday evening after the deaths in May of Khaira Howard and Rebecca Fackler along with the death last week of Ashley Hoath.
That is Trische Duckworth of Survivors Speak. They are alleging medical neglect inside the prison, and Workers Against Oppression activist Zane Parker says “it stems from the guards in the facility, all the way to the front desk, all the way to the director.” Howard’s mother Shaquillia DeShields says she will protest every week until she gets justice for her daughter. Over 30 lawmakers have called for Michigan Department of Corrections director Heidi Washington to resign.
Workers Against Oppression activist Zane Parker says there are widespread problems in the Women’s Huron Valley Correctional Facility.
