Trump Announces $700M For Coal Plants

By Mary Ellen Murphy Jun 5, 2026 | 6:13 AM

(Washington, DC) — President Trump says he wants to bring down energy costs by investing 700-million-dollars in coal plants. Speaking from the Oval Office Thursday, Trump said the money will be used to preserve existing plants and build new ones.

Trump is invoking the Cold War-era Defense Production Act that gives the President authority to support and invest in private production considered vital to national security. The Trump administration has been working to preserve what it calls “beautiful, clean coal,” which currently accounts for about 16 percent of the nation’s energy supply.

President Trump said his action on coal will bring down costs for Americans.

Trump said coal plants in several states will be saved.

The J.H. Campbell coal plant in West Olive remains operational. Originally scheduled to shut down in May 2025 as part of Consumers Energy’s plan to phase out coal, the plant continues to operate under a federal emergency

A May 2026 federal order from the U.S. Department of Energy keeps the plant running through August 16, 2026 to support the Midwest power grid.
