(Lansing, MI) – Governor Gretchen Whitmer has signed a bill to let Mackinac Island voters amend their city charter and give the city the right to regulate ferry services. One company now owns all of the ferries that take visitors to and from the island and Whitmer says access to the island needs to be “accessible and affordable.” Fair Access to Mackinac Island Coalition spokesman John Sellek says they are happy the bill has been approved and signed as “the ferry monopoly controls the only practical ‘road’ to Mackinac Island.”
He says the boats need to be regulated like public utilities.
