Grand Haven, MI (WGHN) – The City of Grand Haven’s Harbor Island coal yard closure and restoration project has been honored with the American Public Works Association Michigan Chapter’s Project of the Year Award.

The award was presented May 21 during the APWA Michigan Chapter Awards Ceremony and builds on the project’s district-level Project of the Year recognition received in late 2025. City officials said the project earned recognition for its innovative environmental restoration efforts, which reduced impacts on the surrounding area while saving an estimated $1 million.

Grand Haven Project Management Director Derek Gadjos said the award reflects years of planning, teamwork, and collaboration among project partners. He noted that the project demonstrates the city’s commitment to protecting Harbor Island while meeting community needs.

The cleanup effort involved close coordination between the city and engineering consulting firm HDR, along with regular communication with residents. Daily safety meetings and proactive hazard management helped the project reach completion without any safety incidents.

Project leaders also used historical site data to create a work plan that kept the remediation effort on schedule and within budget.
