Beach Hazards Statement Issued for West Michigan Lakeshore

By Mary Ellen Murphy May 20, 2026 | 6:54 AM

Grand Haven, MI (WGHN) – A Beach Hazards Statement is in effect from 1 p.m. this afternoon through late tonight for beaches in Ottawa, Allegan, and Van Buren counties.

Dangerous swimming conditions are expected due to high waves, strong currents, and increasing north winds. Waves are forecast to build to 3 to 5 feet, peaking around 6 p.m., as winds increase to 15 to 25 mph.

The most hazardous conditions are expected along the north sides of piers, including at Holland State Park and North Beach in South Haven.

Officials warn that strong currents can quickly pull swimmers into deeper water, while large waves may sweep people off piers.

Beachgoers are urged to stay out of the water, avoid walking on piers, and check with local authorities for possible beach closures.
