Ottawa County, MI (WGHN) – The Ottawa County Department of Public Health has lifted the No Body Contact Advisory for Lloyds Bayou Creek between the North Bank Trail and M-104, effective May 15.
Health officials say water samples collected after an untreated sewage spill confirmed water quality has returned to safe levels for recreational use.
The advisory was originally issued May 11 following a sewage spill reported May 10.
As warmer weather brings more people to West Michigan waterways, public health officials are reminding residents to take precautions around creeks, rivers and lakes, which naturally contain bacteria and other germs that can cause illness.
Safety tips include:
- Avoid swallowing surface water
- Wash hands before eating
- Keep children in clean swim diapers
- Stay out of the water when sick
- Avoid murky or foul-smelling water
- Avoid swimming after heavy rainfall
- Shower after swimming
Residents can report health-related concerns by calling 616-393-5645 or visiting the Ottawa County health department website.
