West Michigan Lakeshore – the charming Lake Michigan communities of South Haven and Saugatuck are perfect for a day trip or weekend getaway

South Haven

  • Start off the weekend with the Michigan Maritime Museum’s Blessing of the Fleet & Fish Fry on Friday, May 22.
  • Explore the walkable downtown and iconic Lake Michigan pier and lighthouse
  • Gather downtown for a classic Memorial Day parade on Monday, May 25

Saugatuck

  • The artsy lakeside community has a Memorial Day parade of its own, and its galleries, beaches and dining options bring visitors back year after year
  • Restaurant tip – If you like homemade fried chicken and elevated creole cuisine, you’ll love The Southerner, just outside downtown overlooking the harbor

Crystal Mountain – the 19th annual Michigan Beer & Brat Festival (Saturday, May 23)

  • Outdoor festival at the base of the mountain pairs Michigan-brewed beers, wines, and ciders with locally made brats and fresh asparagus from local farmers
  • Ride a chairlift to the top for a ride on the Crystal Coaster Alpine Slide
  • Bring your clubs and play 18 before heading to the festival

Eastern U.P.

  • Get up close to 1000-foot Great Lakes freighters at the Soo Locks
  • Check out the second-largest waterfall east of the Mississippi by volume at Tahquamenon Falls State Park
