UPDATE: Fruitport Township Official Statement on Shooting at Fruitport Township Post-Prom Party

Fruitport Township, MI (WGHN) – The following is an update from Fruitport Towship Police Department. 

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
On Saturday, May 9, at approximately 11:50 p.m., the Fruitport Township Police Department responded to the Fruitport VFW, located at 5201 Airline Highway in Fruitport, Michigan, following reports that a subject had been struck by a vehicle in the roadway. While officers were enroute, dispatch information was updated to indicate that a shooting had also occurred at the location.

The preliminary investigation indicates that multiple individuals discharged firearms during the incident, striking four people. All four victims were transported to Trinity Health Hospital in Muskegon and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

In addition, two individuals were struck by vehicles in the roadway during the incident, with one person sustaining serious injuries.

A post-prom party was being held at the VFW at the time of the incident. Fruitport Township Public Safety personnel, along with officers from several law enforcement agencies throughout Muskegon County, responded to the scene. The Michigan State Police Crime Lab also assisted with the investigation.

The Fruitport Township Police Department continues to actively investigate the incident, including reviewing video evidence from the scene. Authorities are asking anyone with information related to the incident to contact the department.

Several media outlets are reporting that police from multiple agencies responded early Sunday morning to a reported shooting at a VFW hall in Fruitport Township following a large post-prom gathering attended by teenagers.

The incident happened at the VFW hall on Airline Road, where witnesses said dozens of young people had gathered after prom celebrations Saturday night. Several Muskegon-area schools, including Muskegon High School, Muskegon Heights High School, Muskegon Catholic Central and North Muskegon High School, held prom events that evening.

WOOD TV 8 reports that a  resident who lives near the hall reported hearing dozens of gunshots shortly before midnight and seeing teenagers in prom attire fleeing the area.

The Greater Grand Rapids Scanner page on Facebook states that shots being fired were reported at 11:48 p.m.

Authorities have not yet confirmed how many people may have been injured, what led to the violence or whether any arrests have been made. Officers remained at the scene for several hours as the investigation continued.
