Grand Haven, MI (WGHN) – There are 187 local millage proposals on the ballot today asking for over four-point-25-billion-dollars from voters across 67 counties. Most of them, 125, are school requests of over four-billion-dollars. That makes up for 94-percent of what is being requested of voters. Sixty-five school bonds for nearly three-point-74-million-dollars are on the ballots, making up for 88-percent of the money.
Voters in portions of Ottawa and Muskegon counties will weigh several proposals, most of them focused on school funding.
Grand Haven Area Public Schools is asking voters to renew its non-homestead operating millage. If approved, the district would continue collecting 18 mills on non-homestead properties — including commercial and industrial properties, some agricultural land, and second homes such as rentals or vacation properties. The renewal is expected to generate about $20.8 million annually for operating costs.
Spring Lake Public Schools is also seeking renewal of its non-homestead operating millage. The proposal would maintain the 18-mill levy on non-homestead properties and is projected to bring in roughly $5.1 million per year for district operations.
Other districts with operating millage renewal proposals on the ballot include Coopersville Area Public Schools, Zeeland Public Schools, West Ottawa Public Schools and Orchard View Schools.
In Muskegon, voters in the Muskegon Public Schools district will decide on a $37.1 million bond proposal. The plan would maintain the current debt tax rate of 7.5 mills while funding facility upgrades.
The City of Holland and Holland Township are seeking approval of a 0.6-mill levy to support operations of the Macatawa Area Express (MAX) Transportation Authority. Meanwhile, Holland Public Schools has a separate sinking fund proposal that would levy 1.25 mills over 10 years for building and site improvements.
In Muskegon, voters in the Muskegon Public Schools district will decide on a $37.1 million bond proposal. The plan would maintain the current debt tax rate of 7.5 mills while funding facility upgrades.
Election results will be available after polls close at 8.
