(Grand Rapids, MI) — Morel mushroom season is underway in Michigan. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says that while May is morel month in Michigan, the actual fruiting period of the mushrooms begins in the last few weeks of April.

The mushrooms are often found in locations where sizable fires occurred the year before. To help morel hunters, the DNR has released a map showing where mushrooms may be located and where there were prescribed burns and wildfires last year. That map can be found by visiting michigan.gov.
