Attorney General’s Office: 51 Former Priests In GR Catholic Diocese Accused Of Sex Crimes

By Mary Ellen Murphy Dec 16, 2025 | 6:27 AM

(Grand Rapids, MI) — The office of Attorney General Dana Nessel says 51 former priests in the Grand Rapids Catholic Diocese allegedly committed sexual abuse and misconduct. Of the 51, 37 are known or presumed to be dead and the other 14 are no longer active priests. The AG’s office has now issued five reports of seven separate investigations and will publish their reports on Detroit and Saginaw in the next year. Nessel says the Diocese of Grand Rapids “fully cooperated with the Department in this investigation” and charges will not be pressed.

The reasons include the statutes of limitations being up for several claims, the deaths of priests, and victims not being interested in pursuing the case.
