Grand Haven, MI (WGHN) – Drivers entering Grand Haven, Spring Lake and Ferrysburg will now see new signs recognizing each community’s recent designation as a Purple Heart Community.
The Tri-Cities adopted the designation in August this year to formally honor service members who were wounded or killed in combat. The effort began in July when military historian Dr. Chris Petras proposed the idea and quickly gained support from local leaders, who approved resolutions in all three communities.
American Legion Post 28 helped fund the new roadside signs, continuing its ongoing support of local veterans.
Community leaders say the designation reflects the area’s long-standing tradition of patriotism and civic involvement. Petras’ research has already led to more than 20 West Michigan service members receiving posthumous Purple Heart recognition.
