The coal pile area from the Former J.B. Sims Generating Station will get an overhaul in the coming weeks as contractors remove remaining coal and soil impacted coal from the 11-acre site. Once coal and coal impacted soil is removed, verified by HDR and approved by EGLE, Grand Haven will have satisfied the regulatory requirement for the removal of all unused coal from the 11-acre site.

Grand Haven, MI (WGHN) – The City of Grand Haven recently held a town hall last week and learned about what’s next for t’s next for Harbor Island.

The 11-acre island has sat contaminated and largely unused since the J.B. Sims power plant shut down in 2020. Over the past several months, contractors removed coal and coal-impacted soil from the site, but PFAS in the groundwater and coal residuals still remain.

City officials say they’re currently moving into the next phase of testing and data collection. A long-term cleanup plan is expected to be selected by summer 2026, with remediation work running through 2029.

Possible future uses for the island include new trails, a nature viewing tower, retail spaces, or an outdoor amphitheater. Another public update is expected in 2026.
