Ferrysburg Council Dismisses Ethics Complaints Against Mayor

Ferrysburg, MI (WGHN) – Ferrysburg City Council has dismissed two ethics complaints filed by Councilmember Rebecca Hopp and resident Joe Lyons following comments made by Mayor Richard Carlson during an August council meeting. TV 13 reports that Hopp said she filed her complaint after Carlson publicly criticized her and Lyons on Aug. 18. The two had previously filed an ethics complaint over the appointment of Commissioner Jake Stearley’s wife, Emily, to the city’s recreation committee in June.

According to Hopp, both complaints were reviewed by the council on Oct. 2 but failed to pass. She said Carlson’s complaint was dismissed on a 4–2 vote, while hers ended in a 3–3 tie.

In a written statement, Carlson said he was not surprised by the outcome, calling the complaints “baseless” and “politically motivated.” He said the council can now “keep its eyes on the horizon, not the rearview mirror.”

Hopp said the city manager and attorney have confirmed no further action will be taken.
