(Grand Blanc, MI) – The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is speaking out after Sunday’s violent attack at an LDS church in Michigan. Spokesperson Doug Andersen called the shooting a “tragic act of violence” and says the church is cooperating with local authorities and is in contact with emergency responders assisting victims and families. Andersen said the church is grateful for the global outpouring of prayers and support and emphasized that places of worship are meant to be sanctuaries for peace, prayer, and connection.
Four people, plus the shooter, were killed and several others injured. Police Chief William Reyne said 40-year-old Thomas Jacob Sanford drove his vehicle through the front doors of the church and started shooting. The former Marine then set a fire inside the church before being fatally shot by responding officers in the parking lot. No word yet on a possible motive.
